Why I am glad I applied a tempered glass protector on my phone, and why you should too!

Most people love their smartphones and take a lot of care for them. They are expensive pieces of cutting edge technology that does everything from emails, calls(duh), messaging, and run the plethora of apps that are available through their app stores. There are many things people are worried about when using a smartphone, mainly data leaks, but with phones getting thinner everyday, there is always one thing that remains a smartphone owner’s worst dream: cracking the goddamn screen.

And that is exactly what happened to me last night. Despite owning 5+ phones over the years, never had I broken a screen. Never.

I knocked my Galaxy S4 (GT-i9505) onto the corner of my bed. It was terrible. The first thing I noticed was a huge crack in the upper section of my beloved phone.

Oh noes, I thought.

But then it hit me. I had a tempered screen protector on! Maybe, just maybe the crack did not go that deep. Or maybe it did–there was only one way to find out, I had to lift the tempered layer.

Turns out I was right. The cheap tempered glass protector really did save my phone from an expensive glass repair. The three shops I contacted said the glass is ~$110 to replace, and the LCD itself is ~$220. My phone survived the damage and the screen is not even scratched.

Here is what the end results were after I carefully removed my protector and gave myself a small cut:

Basically, a $4 investment saved me from a $110 – $220 repair. Not bad at all, I would say. Although I do have to buy a layer of carbon fiber skin and another protector, I am quite happy with the results. I will need to spend a maximum of $8 CAD to get both items and get back to using the phone worry-free again.

I definitely recommend others to do the same as I did, buying a tempered protector for their smartphones. Just don’t drop it near the corner of a bed though, so you don’t end up being me.
